6.5/10

Vivid descriptions and engaging. Thought-provoking commentary on government. Julia ruined the story, however. Every time Winston had a profound or significant thought, her response was "duh", then "yawn", followed by "I'm going back to sleep"; yet the plot was centered around their relationship.

The book is ruined by Julia and her being nothing but an object of desire. Orwell's attempt to make her the center of rebellion discourse and various philosophical ideas was, unfortunately, laughable. I almost stopped reading.

The philosophical ideas save the book in the end, but the ending itself failed for the same mentioned reasons. The context of the story is important, but that is no excuse.
