The stories have a common theme. The focus is on the feeling of things — perhaps specifically on the intricacies of mental states. And Kavan does an excellent job in depicting and expressing that. She depicts her characters with a beautifully lucid illucidity.
The way Kavan "indirectly" explores the minds of her characters is very well done. Her stories lack depth in a sense, but it is made up for by the exploration of thoughts and feelings rather than the stories themselves.
It is typical Anna Kavan with her experimental style which I can appreciate. However, the book lacks impact.
