It feels very much of the time period. The story being told in such a recounting way hurts the impact quite a lot, including the use of present-tense.

Everything is rather obtuse. There is a good element of "what is going on," but not in such a way as to be engrossing or even interesting.

The book isn't bad or poorly written. However, I can see no reason to read it. I can't even call it an experience. It simply has no impact whatsoever.
